Lasten todistukset lumimyrskyn keskellä

Taas tuli kutsu kotiin. Syykin on tuttu - lumimyrsky. T oli alkuiltapäivään saakka kotona kipeän Iso-O:n kanssa vietyään ensin pojat kouluihinsa ja haettuaan heidät sieltä ennenaikaisesti pois (klo 13), ja vaihdoimme vuoroa iltapäivällä (olin ennakoinut tilanteen ja lähtenyt töihin kello kuuden metrolla). Nyt on lumityöt hetkeksi tehtyinä. Kun pöydällä odottaa höyryävä kuppi kahvia ja kolme siistiä kirjekuorta sisällään syyslukukauden todistukset, on mukava istua hetkeksi lepäilemään ja alkaa niitä tutkailla.

E:n ja Iso-O:n arviot olivat hyvin samankaltaisia. Molempien kaikki rastit (n. 50 kpl) olivat oikeassa sarakkeessa paitsi erillisessä kieliarviossa, jossa Iso-O:n kaikki ja kahta lukuunottamatta E:n rastit olivat toiseksi parhaimmassa luokassa ("intermediate"). Ne E:n kaksi eritasoista rastia olivat ponnahtaneet parhaimpaan luokkaan ("transitioning"), mikä tarkoittaa samantasoista kielitaitoa kuin samanikäisillä paikallisilla. Nämä rastit tulivat osiosta lukeminen ja lukemisen ymmärtäminen. Pienoista äidinylpeyttä ilmoilla.

Myös Pikku-O sai todistuksen, pitäähän sitä nyt juuri kolme vuotta täyttäneen akateemisia saavutuksia arvioida. Toisin kuin isosisaruksillaan, hänen rastinsa (n. 70 kpl) olivat jakautuneet paljon tasaisemmin "developing" ja "well developed" sarakkeiden välille. Vielä ei ole ihan professoritasolla tämä meidän pienimmäisemme - Akateemisen kasvun 26 rastista vain neljä oli kiivennyt hyvin kehittyneelle tasolle. Aijai, meinaa tulla kiire saada tämä poika Ivy League-kelpoiseksi.

Oli rastit missä sarakkeessa tahansa, on opettajan sanallinen arvio todistuksen lopussa aina niin mieltälämmittävää luettavaa. Tänä vuonna E:n ja Iso-O:n rehtori pahoitteli sitä, että yhteenvedon pituutta on jouduttu niin paljon lyhentämään opettajien ajankäytön tehostamiseksi. Mielestäni tekstiä on vallan tarpeeksi vai mitä itse ajattelette allaolevista teksteistä? Pahoittelen englanninkielen suurta määrää, mutta koska muutamaa lukijaa saattaa kiinnostaa, laitan tekstit tähän kokonaisuudessaan. Vähemmän kiinnostuneet voivat hypätä suoraan viimeiseen kappaleeseen. Tai tehdä jotain paljon mukavampaa.

E:n opettajan yhteenveto:
Social: E is a bright, inquisive student who demonstrates a passion for school and learning! He is cheerful, outgoing classmate who is well liked by all his peers. He is gaining more and more confidence in his English skills each day! He works well collaborationg with students in partners or groups. E is an active participant in class discussions, where he shares insightful comments. He is a pleasure to have in class!

Academic: E consistently displays a strong work ethic in all subject areas. He is making significant progress in reading! He is an animated reader who has excellent expression when he reads aloud. E is able to retell a story with a remarkable amount of details and comprehension! He is an enthusiastic reading group member and enjoys sharing his predictions and responses. In writing, E is working on adding details to his stories and writing with a clear beginning, middle and end. E has been excelling in all our math units this year. He has an impressive knowledge of his addition and related subtraction facts and can solve them rapidly and accurately. E can accurately solve open response problems and can demontrate how he arrived at his answer using words and diagrams!

Eikö olekin ihan riittävästi? Mutta ei tässä suinkaan kaikki - myös englanninopettajalla oli oma yhteenvetonsa:
E is a pleasure to teach. He enthusiastically approaches all of his assignments with numerous ideas, hypotheses, and a sheer joy for learning. E has a strong foundation in English and receives support from ELL (=English Language Learners-ohjelma) four times a week. In these sessions, E reads with a teacher to practice fluency, expression, and to enhance his vocabulary. During writing, E practices writing more complex sentences in English and using specific vocabulary to improve his stories. E will continue to receive support this spring in the areas mentioned above and we look forward to another great semester of learning.

Siirrytäänpä seuraavaan. Alla ensin Iso-O:n opettajien arvio:
Iso-O is such a pleasure to have in class. She has many wonderful ideas and enjoys sharing them with the class. Her inquisitive nature and curiosity about learning have helped her to be a motivated student. She is quite able to follow directions and advocate for herself as needed. Iso-O sometimes needs directions explained to her a second time, but she is quite resourceful and able to pick up quite a lot from her peers. Iso-O is a hard working and dedicated student who is interested in doing her best work. She is kind and caring friend to her peers.

Iso-O has solid early literacy skills. She knows her letters and their sounds, is able to rhyme and knows 20 sight words. Iso-O is beginning to read patterned text and blend phonetically regular words. In writing, Iso-O usually knows just what she wants to say. Her vocabulary has increased greatly and the stories she tells are well developed, detailed and interesting. She enjoys sharing her work with the class.

In math, Iso-O has a solid grasp of concepts being taught. She is able to recognize and extend patterns, read graphs and solve simple problems using manipulatives. She learns new concepts quickly and with easy. We truly enjoy having Iso-O in our class.

Ja englanninopettajan arvio:
Iso-O is a pleasure to teach. Her English skills have expanded significantly since the beginning of the year. Iso-O eagerly approaches all learning, uses many strategies to comprehend language, and is socially adept in communicating effectively with peers. We are working with Iso-O on asking for clarity when she needs it. She receives ELL support three days per week in class. During these times, Iso-O reviews concepts learned in class, practices phonics skills, and works on vocabulary development. Iso-O will continue to receive support this spring and we look forward in working with her.

Viimeisenä, muttei vähäisimpänä, akateemikkomme Pikku-O.
Pikku-O is a very capable and independent young man. He is extremely focused and has excellent concentration. He works well in all areas of the classroom and is very eager for new lessons. Pikku-O's fine and gross motor skills are well developed. He is happy to socialize and work with his classmates in spite of the language difference. He is beginning to speak English and is using more words and phrases every day. Pikku-O's friendly confident personality makes him popular among his classmates.

Teksteistä huomaa, että opettajat käyttävät paljon Kopioi ja liitä-toimintoa yhteenvetoja laatiessaan. Käyttäisin itsekin. Silti niitä tuntuu hyvältä lukea. Upea positiivisuuden hyökyaalto saa omankin mielen oikein hyväksi. Vaikka ne eivät ihan totta kokonaan olisikaan.

Ja juuri tulleen tiedon mukaan koulut ovat kiinni huomenna keskiviikkona lumimyrskyn vuoksi. Ei ole todellista!
